About

Make Decisions Real was a national project about supported decision making.

Supported decision making is about making your own decisions with the right support.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) says that everyone has the right to make their own decisions.

Everyone has the right to get good support to make decisions and to have their decisions respected.

We also know that making decisions is a skill that can be learned over time.

Make Decisions Real was made by people with an intellectual disability. It is for people with disability, their families and other supporters.

Background

There have been lots of supported decision making projects in Australia.

But we found that there are not enough resources made by people with an intellectual disability, for people with an intellectual disability.

Make Decisions Real aimed to:

  • Build the skills of people with an intellectual disability and the people who support them about making decisions.
  • Build peoples’ confidence in making their own decisions.
  • Give people greater choice, opportunities and independence.

The Make Decisions Real project was funded by a National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) grant and ran until June 2024.

What we have done

  • Made co-designed resources and workshops to help people with an intellectual disability, their families and other supporters to make decisions.
  • Made videos about people with an intellectual disability doing supported decision making.
  • Explored the decisions people with an intellectual disability make about money when they are thinking about their NDIS plans and supports.
  • Run an art competition for people with an intellectual disability.
