Inclusion Australia is proud to launch the Speaking Up in the Bush Project.
Speaking Up in the Bush is a 3-year initiative (June 2024 – June 2027) supported by the Department of Social Services through the Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) Grant Program.
This national project supports people with intellectual disability living in regional and remote areas of Australia. We know that people in the bush face extra barriers to getting involved, being included, and having their voices heard. This project aims to change that.
Through the Speaking Up in the Bush Project, people will:
- Learn to speak up for themselves
- Build their self-advocacy skills
- Create strong connections with others
The project will work in rural, regional and remote communities. It will include working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and women with an intellectual disability. It will be co-delivered by a team of people with and without intellectual disability and guided by lived experience.
Together with our strong member organisations, the Speaking Up in the Bush Project is delivered in:
- Inverell and Tenterfield (NSW)
- Gladstone and Hervey Bay (QLD)
- Campaspe, Shepparton and Upper Goulburn Valley (VIC)
- West Coast (TAS)
- Limestone Coast and Outback – North and East (SA)
- Albany and Wheat Belt – South (WA)
- Alice Springs and Darwin (NT)
This project is made possible through the leadership and collaboration of our Project Partners:
- Council for Intellectual Disability (CID) (NSW)
- South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability (SACID) (SA)
- VALID (VIC)
- Speak Out Advocacy (TAS)
- Parent to Parent (P2P) (QLD)
- Inclusion NT (NT)
- Developmental Disability WA (DDWA) (WA)
Together we are building a stronger, more connected self-advocacy network – one that will support people in regional and remote communities now, and into the future.
