Federal Election 2025: What it means for people with disability

In Australia there is a federal election about every 3 years. This is how Australia’s Government is chosen.

The next election will happen on 3 May 2025. Australians will get the chance to vote for who they think should be in the next Government.

There is accessible information about elections on the Australian Electoral Commission website. It includes how to enrol to vote and how to make your vote

You can find Inclusion Australia’s advocacy on making elections more accessible here.

Our election platform

An election platform is a list of important actions we want the politicians who are elected in the next government to do. It tells leaders what changes are needed to make sure all people with an intellectual disability can live an inclusive life.

Before an election, we share this platform with politicians. We ask them to listen and promise to commit to the actions. When people vote, they can think about which politicians support these actions.

Inclusion Australia is working with our member organisations, people with an intellectual disability and families. Together we will decide on the actions that we believe all major parties must commit to if they are chosen to form the next government.

We are also working with other Disability Representative Organisations (DROs) on joint election priorities.

Equal pay, equal right – our idea for the 2025 election

Inclusion Australia is asking politicians to commit to a new working group. This group will help make sure all people with an intellectual disability get fair wages.  We call this group the Ministerial Implementation Working Group.

We want this group to give advice to the government on how to make the Disability Royal Commission Recommendation 7.31 happen. This Recommendation is about stopping the sub-minimum wages that are paid to people with an intellectual disability.

You can find Easy Read information about Recommendation 7.31 of the Disability Royal Commission here.

The group would bring together people with an intellectual disability, peak disability organisations, government agencies, employers, service providers and unions. They will work together to make a plan for achieving fair wages and more employment opportunities.

Our Health STILL Counts

Council for Intellectual Disability and Inclusion Australia have launched a joint campaign called Our Health STILL Counts.

We are asking the next Federal Government to:

  1. Implement the Roadmap: A renewed, timely commitment to full and effective implementation of the National Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Intellectual Disability.
  2. Training for doctors: Commit to action that will ensure health professionals and students get the training they need to provide quality health care to people with intellectual disability.
  3. Incentivise GP care: Help doctors to spend more time with people with intellectual disability

Visit the CID website for more information about the campaign.
