Joint submission to the Community Visitor Scheme Consultation

Community Visitors are people who visit places where people with disability live. They check that people are safe and being treated fairly. Right now, the rules for these visits are different in each state and territory. The Australian Government wanted to hear peoples’ ideas for making Community Visitor Schemes the same across Australia.

We made a joint submission with Down Syndrome Australia. We talked about how a Community Visitor Scheme that is the same across Australia should:

  • Use the skills and knowledge that already exist in local communities
  • Link with independent advocacy and other community supports
  • Have enough money and resources to meet the real needs of people with an intellectual disability.
