Current and proposed sexual consent laws in Australia

In November 2022, the Australian Senate put forward an inquiry to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee to report on Australia’s current and proposed sexual consent laws.

The Inquiry will look at Australia’s current sexual consent laws and find out what changes should be made. The main issues the Inquiry will focus on include:

  • How consent laws are the same or different in different states and territories
  • What would be good or bad about making consent laws the same across Australia
  • How consent laws impact survivors in the justice system
  • How consent laws impact consent education.

Inclusion Australia made a submission to the Inquiry. Our submission talks about how current and proposed sexual consent laws impact people with an intellectual disability, especially the availability of accessible consent education.

The Final Report will be available by 30 June 2023.
